Many moons ago I used to listen to a rap group called Jurassic 5. They were a group of MC’s that stripped things back to basics and were all about the music/lyrics and I loved quite a few of their tracks…
There’s a lyric in one of their singles that goes:
“So, uh, let’s take it back to the concrete streets
Original beats from real live emcees
Playground tactics, no rabbit in a hat tricks
Just that classic rap shit from Jurassic”
If rap is your thing, they don’t make ’em like this anymore:
Why is that relevant to this blog?
Well, I wanted to create a blog that goes back to basics, in a way similar to when there weren’t quite so many bells and whistles online. I found myself missing the traditional type of blog – you know, those blogs you’d read which were more about the content than they were about flashy graphics and tons of stuff loading up just to see the page?
I’m not going as far as to say that minimalist is what I’m talking about, but I definitely think there is a place for a more traditional blog and that’s more in-line with the overall intention with this one. I also don’t want it to break with WordPress updates because it’s got a gazillion plugins installed, because that will just put me off writing on here regularly. I love technology but I can also be a bit of a luddite; the motto I largely subscribe to “If it aint broke don’t fix it” and the latest thing isn’t ALWAYS better.
My inspiration for creating a blog like this as my primary blog for ‘all things marketing online’ was actually a video I was watching the other day where this guy on the video showed his old blog on Wayback Machine. I thought about making everything on here monochrome as well but decided against it after realising this would make the blog look like it was programmed on a ZX81 (anyone remember those microcomputers? When I was a kid my mate had one but he threw it in the bin when he got a new Spectrum 48k 🙂 ).
It was a basic blog and we’re talking about 15 years ago or so here. What struck me about it was how much interaction was going on in the post comments, which was basically down to two things:
1. The quality of the content being shared with the audience.
2. Less distractions on the blog itself and more focus on the content.
I am going to share with you content that you can actually use and run with to build your online business, so you can tell your boss to “hit the road Jack” and live life on your own terms.
If you’re retired, then stick around because you can run a successful online business in your spare time. Heck, even if you love your job you can still do this if you have an hour or two to spare when the working day is over.
This is going to be quite a ride. I encourage you to engage with me in the comments on this blog and in future posts. My promise to you is I will reply to people as much as I can, when I have the time available. This won’t be coaching and I’m putting no restrictions on what I write, but this blog will be for sharing with my audience. I will have a few ads on the site for products I use and recommend but that’s going to be about it.
I will also have somewhere on the site you can sign up for a newsletter and a page about things I use on a daily basis. I just think it makes sense to do that but none of this is going to distract from what I’m writing or updating you about. I’m also not going to heavily edit these posts so they read perfectly, I don’t want it to be a big hassle thinking about what I’m writing and I certainly don’t want to spend anytime in paralysis by analysis before I hit publish.
So if you see any grammatical or spelling errors on the site you don’t need to tell me about them 🙂
One day I may not write very much – it might be a thought. Another day it may be about a product, a service or it may be a case study update. I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to structure it all yet so this is going to naturally evolve over time. I want somewhere to write and while I can do that on places like Medium, I want the bulk of my written content to be on an asset I am in control of so yep, it’s gonna be on this blog.
My hope is one of those audience members is YOU and I am looking forward to helping you to achieving your online income goals. I’m also going to have some fun with this along the way.
So let’s keep going back to those concrete streets and get on with this business of helping everyone that visits this blog make more money online. If you’re willing to put some work in and follow what I’m talking about I promise you are going to learn a few things here over time.
With all that said, it’s pretty late on a Saturday night as I type this so thanks for reading and I’ll see you in the next post.
Hi Dean,
I’m getting into the spirit of things by dropping you an old-skool blog comment. 😊
I love this idea mate and totally agree that I miss those ‘traditional’ blogs where you’d pop by each day and follow along with what a particular marketer was up to. I think we’ve lost that sense of community online… Ironically social media doesn’t quite replace it somehow.
Anyway, I’ve bookmarked your blog and look forward to reading your posts. I’ve noticed a few blogs springing up lately, so perhaps we’ll see some kind of return to those good old days, ha.
Cheers,
Dan
Hi Dan,
Thanks mate, I appreciate that 😊. Ah, the good old days – they don’t make ’em like they used to. Mind you, they say the same thing about nostalgia.
You’re the first person to comment on post one and being the first is nearly always a good thing, especially if you’ve just won the annual egg and spoon race 🥚🥄😊.
I’ve never won because Daley Thompson kept entering (just kidding) 😂.
Here’s to more community and a few more moments spent diving into a deep pool of quiet contemplation 🧘♂️, away from the noise of social media – if only for a short while.
I’ll raise a glass to that! 🍻 Cheers for stopping by and bookmarking/commenting.
See you in the next one.
Dean
